Student Opportunities
HSAP
High school students interested in the fields of math and science are encouraged to apply to the Army Educational Outreach Program (AEOP) High School Apprenticeship Program (HSAP). The program is an eight-week summer program designed so that high school students can apprentice in fields of their choice with experienced scientists and engineers serving as their mentors.

Apprenticeships at the MRICD are offered to students entering Grade 10 in the fall through those graduating 12th grade; additionally students must be at least 15 years of age by the start date.
At the MRICD, students apprentice in a professional research laboratory setting and are treated as research assistants. They learn how their research can benefit the Army as well as the civilian community. All participants are awarded an educational stipend as part of the program.
Please visit the HSAP Program website to submit your application. When applying, designate the MRICD as your lab of choice so that your application can be given thorough consideration for an apprenticeship in our labs.
GEMS
Gains in the Education of Mathematics and Science (GEMS) is an Army-sponsored, MRICD-supported, summer STEM enrichment program for middle and high school students that takes place in participating Army research laboratories and engineering centers.
GEMS's mission is to interest young people, who might not otherwise give serious thought to becoming scientists or engineers, in STEM careers early enough that they have the time to attain the appropriate academic training. The program is based on a multi-disciplinary educational curriculum, and is focused on age and grade-appropriate hands-on activities, in areas such as science, engineering, mathematics, computational sciences, computational biology, biomedical sciences, chemistry and biology. Rising 5th through 12th graders are eligible.
The MRICD participates in the Aberdeen Proving Ground (APG) GEMS program, specifically in their GEMS I program, which is for students in 5th through 7th grade. Students in GEMS I will experience a wide range of laboratory experiences from synthesis to fabrication to instrumentation/analysis. The 2023 GEMS program has sessions on chemistry, biology, physics, engineering, and earth science along with other sessions. For questions about GEMS I, please contact MRICD's Research Development and Integration Office at usarmy.apg.medcom-usamricd.list.rdi@health.mil. Drop off and pick up of students in GEMS I will occur 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. on Aberdeen Proving Ground. The building number and directions will be included in our invitation email (if student is selected).
